How Graphic Designers Tell Stories

Overview

Storytelling is part of our world and is a central creative element in books, movies and television shows. You can break down every aspect of your own life into a story through design. A graphic designer tells a story with its structure. There are many different facets of storytelling that a designer can use during the process.

Behind The Design, you find Great Inspiration

We grow our creative talents through experience: whether it’s learning from a designer about how things came to be or by growing skillsets with courses, no great artist exists without inspiration. Famously declared by Isaac Newton about scientific progress: “If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of Giants.”

By better understanding where we’ve come from and the brilliant minds who have come before us, we have a more incredible experience of creative possibilities. There are some design tales that have made for a substantially richer, more beautiful world. All are worth knowing — and moving forwards from.

A graphic designer starts studying graphic design without fully understanding what it entail. They need the space to play, to grow and to explore and, by doing this, a world of possibilities is opened to them.

The approach to design

A graphic designer approaches design from a particular point of view, creating an illustration that enables the big picture to be seen – basically creating a map for the direction of the story to be envisioned. By working with people and understanding the client’s end goal, the project will become clearer and clearer.

Whether the idea is big or small is irrelevant. It’s all about working with great people that cultivate a culture of design. This leads to inspiration, as all are working together towards reaching an ultimate goal. Sadly, this kind of opportunity and work environment is not always available and, often, a designer simply will be installed into a cubical and tasked with copy-paste jobs, which, over time, squashes all creative inspiration they once possessed.

Keep your design moving forward

A designer wants to learn everything. Do they think this is practical? Not at all – but that won’t stop the hunger to learn and grow and improve upon their skills. It’s essential to make time to learn the new trends, styles and formats. Complacency and comfort zones are dangerous errors for any graphic designer. With the speed with which technology is constantly moving forward, complacency leads to being out-of-date in a matter of months. That hunger to learn, then, should always be encouraged and made room for; it will keep your design relevant and relatable.

Change with the Changes

Online resources are constantly developing which is consequences for designers. This kind of work has never been more comfortable, but challenging and fun too, and a designer can keep on growing while still practising and staying focused. While the result today might be or look homogenous, it’s also pushing the envelope of what is accepted by real clients and real consumers.

They are intrigued to see who steps up to the challenge; you can even judge popularity by the width of the path. Whenever time allows, the designer may be passionate about activism and addressing social issues in general, but it’s kind of hard to separate that from their work. The line is between professional and personal projects.

Keep the Spark of inspiration alive!

In closing, behind every inspired design is an, inspired, productive designer. Keeping this drive and passion alive takes work and intentional focus. Just like a plant needs watering and sunlight to thrive and grow, a designer needs a creative workspace, innovative team and the space to explore. It is through those means that the spark of inspiration comes to life.
